So you're in Srinagar and want to see the famous meadows? Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri are all doable as day trips but to be honest, the distances on paper don't tell you much. Traffic, snow, and random taxi rules can turn a "short" drive into a long one.
Gulmarg is about 50 km away. Pahalgam is 90-95 km. Doodhpathri is somewhere around 42-50 km. Sounds fine except nobody mentions the hours you'll spend stuck on the road when traffic piles up or snow decides to show up. Sort out your cab situation before you leave, it'll save you time and money.
How far are these places actually?
Here are the real ground figures from Srinagar city centre (Lal Chowk / Dal Lake):
- Gulmarg: Approximately 50-51 km from Srinagar. On a good day, you might take 1.5-2 hours. In winter, especially after snow, budget 2-3.5 hours or more.
- Pahalgam: ~90-96 km southeast. Normally 2.5-3.5 hours. During Amarnath Yatra season, add security checks and restrictions and that's 4-5 hours easily.
- Doodhpathri: Happens to be ~42–50 km. Usually 1.5-2 hours if the road's open. Snow can make the last bit sketchy or completely blocked.
- Gulmarg to Pahalgam Direct: Going straight from Gulmarg to Pahalgam without going back through Srinagar? While possible, it's longer than you'd think. Via the Srinagar bypass it's 137-150 km, which means 4.5-6 hours or more.
These are rough numbers from the city centre. Your starting point, traffic and weather will mess with them.

1. Srinagar to Gulmarg
Gulmarg sits at about 2,650 m above sea level. Wide meadows, pine forests, mountain views, we have all seen the photos. The drive itself is part of the deal. The route goes through Narbal, Magam, Kunzer, then Tangmarg, and finally uphill to Gulmarg. Most of it is fine and you'll pass through towns and if lucky, you might even spot some Asian monkeys enroute, but the last 13 km from Tangmarg is where it gets interesting, winding mountain roads with sharp bends. If it's snowing or icy, be careful.
On other good days, 1-1.5 hours and remember, the scenery starts getting good once you're past Tangmarg.
When to go
- April to June: If pleasant weather, lush green meadows are your go to, this is the perfect time for you. The weather is nice, roads are manageable and the time, great.
- July to August: There might be occasional rain during this time. Same drive time though (1-1.5 hour) but wet roads and bad visibility slow things down for you and it might take longer.
- September to October: It's cooler, clearer views and apple harvest happening in the villages. Solid choice if you want to see life happening.
- December to March: Snow, that's why maximum people choose Gulmarg during winters. It looks completely different, but getting there takes longer. 2-3.5 hours depending on conditions and vehicle restrictions might kick in for snow chains might be needed. Check road advisories before leaving and ask your driver if the car can handle winter.
What to do there
The Gondola is the main draw. Two phases: first goes to Kongdoori, second continues to Apharwat Peak. Old fares were around 900rs for Phase 1 and 1,100 rs for Phase 2, but it's recommended to check the official portal for prices keep changing. Book ahead during peak season but remember weather can shut it down even if you have a ticket.
If the gondola's not running, or you just want a slower day, you can walk the meadows, check out St. Mary's Church, hang around the golf course. Pony rides are an option too but fix the price and route before you start, not after. For a complete sightseeing breakdown, read our Gulmarg Destination Guide.
2. Srinagar to Pahalgam
Pahalgam is approximately 90-95 km southeast at about 2,130 m above sea level. The famous Lidder River runs through it and pine slopes all around. Some people just chill in the town but others use it as a base for Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. The famous ABC.
If you want all three, give yourself time. The drive from Srinagar is only half the story, local transport can eat into your day.
The route is quite long, you'll have to travel through Pampore, Awantipora, Anantnag, Mattan and then you'll reach Pahalgam. Anantnag traffic is a pain during holidays and summer. After that, the road gets more mountainous and follows the Lidder.
When to go
- April to June: This time is the most popular. Pleasant weather, not too hot nor too cold, ideal for vacation. And travel time will be approximately 2.5-3.5 hours, more if there's roadwork or heavy traffic.
- July to August: During these months, plan more carefully for Amarnath Yatra affects traffic and movement. Security checks can push it to 4-5 hours. Leave early if you want to sightsee the same day.
- September-October: It's cooler and less crowded. Golden chinars and serene Lidder riverbanks.
- December to February: Since it's the season of snow, the freezing conditions can slow you down or close roads temporarily causing heavy traffic. Leave 3-4 hours early and check conditions before you go.
The taxi situation in Pahalgam
This mostly catches people off guard. The cab that will bring you from Srinagar might not be allowed to take you to every sightseeing spot in Pahalgam. Local union taxis may be required to visit Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, Chandanwari. Ask your Srinagar driver about this before booking. Find out where the vehicle can go and whether you'll need to arrange another taxi once you arrive to avoid later trouble. Also, confirm at the local taxi stand because rules change.
Budget roughly ranges from ₹800 to ₹1,200 per vehicle for a local sightseeing taxi to one destination. That's an estimate though and not a confirmed rate.
Aru + Betaab + Chandanwari = the A-B-C circuit. If you want all three, ask for a combined fare and check what's included. Also, it's worth to be noted, Baisaran (Mini Switzerland) is another spot. Usually reached on foot or by pony, inaccessible via taxi. Check options before deciding. Explore full valley itineraries in our Pahalgam Travel Guide.
3. Srinagar to Doodhpathri
Doodhpathri, located in the Budgam district feels different from the more touristy spots in Kashmir. At ~2,750 m above sea level, it's all about open grasslands, streams and pine hills.
The name itself means "Valley of Milk" Often linked to the foamy water flowing through parts of it although for most people, the appeal is just the landscape. Most people do it as a day trip from Srinagar. The route goes through Chadoora and Charar-e-Sharief.
Drive is usually 1.5-2 hours when the road's open. Ask your driver about conditions, especially if rain or snow is forecast.
When to visit
Doodhpathri is worth visiting throughout the year although the winter season is unpredictable. Snow can restrict access or make it impossible to travel, there's no fixed closure period, check with local drivers or authorities before going.
There aren't notable facilities available in Doodhpathri like Gulmarg or Pahalgam. During tourist season however, people set up small stalls and sell kahwa, tea and other snacks. Restaurant options are often limited so it's advisable to bring water and food if possible. Learn more in our Doodhpathri Meadow Guide.
The Bottom Line: Distances in Kashmir are misleading. A place 50 km away can take two hours and the return trip is just as tiring. Don't rush through every valley. Spend time in the Gulmarg meadows, walk by the Lidder in Pahalgam or just sit in Doodhpathri if that's what you feel like. The point isn't ticking off destinations. It's having enough time to actually be there.
